Jess and pianist Dylan Perez are currently developing a debut album exploring the Four Serious Songs of Johannes Brahms, examining what it means to record music ‘of the canon’ today. They will open the bulletproof display cabinet and encourage fresh, democratic and diverse responses to this mainstay of the recital repertoire with the newly formed Music & Being Collective: sound engineer Bobby Williams, photographer Clare Park, movement practitioner Debbie Green, and composer Alex Mills.
An open laboratory space exploring music and our sense of self, founded by Alex Mills and Jess Dandy
Music can reconnect us with the deepest parts of ourselves. It can facilitate profound self-expression and self-discovery. It can help us explore, cultivate and ultimately know our inner worlds, enriching our connection with everything around us. However, as artists, we noticed that a lot of music making today takes these fundamental capacities of music for granted.
We founded The Music & Being Collective to consciously explore the potential of these approaches in our artistic practice through collaborative and often interdisciplinary projects. The collective is located at the intersection of music, art, wellbeing, spirituality, self-expression, physical and mental health.
It is an open laboratory space that invites artists, musicians and audiences to re-consider how music can reconnect us with a sense of ourselves, and the world around us.
